Farmers and workers from across Himachal Pradesh held protests on Wednesday, joining a nationwide campaign organised by the Sanyukt Kisan Manch.
The protesters raised concerns over policies they said harm agriculture and local livelihoods, including land eviction drives and Central government’s trade decisions.
In Shimla, protesters staged symbolic demonstrations and submitted memorandums. Sohan Singh Thakur, president of the Himachal Pradesh Apple Growers' Association, voiced concerns over tariffs and land disputes.
He said the government has neglected farmer-friendly policies. Thakur also highlighted recent changes in state land laws and indifferent court actions, which he said make life harder for farmers.
Protesters called for a hike in import duties on farm products to protect domestic agriculture from international competition. He flayed the current approach to agricultural imports and cited eviction cases as examples of systemic injustice. He said farmers were determined to challenge unfair policies through legal means.
