The Himachal Pradesh government has urged farmers to enrol in the crop insurance scheme by December 15. Officials on Wednesday said this would help farmers protect themselves from possible crop losses.
At a meeting of the district-level monitoring committee under the Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme in Hamirpur, Deputy Commissioner Amarjeet Singh asked people to spread awareness about the scheme and encourage farmers to take its benefits.
The meeting reviewed the overall progress and achievements of the Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme in Hamirpur. Deputy Director of Agriculture Shashi Pal Atri said the last date to insure wheat crops for the Rabi 2025-26 season is December 15.
He said farmers need to pay a premium of only Rs 36 per canal, at a rate of 1.5 per cent, to insure their wheat crop. If the crop is damaged due to natural causes, Kshema General Insurance Company will compensate them.
The agriculture officer said there are currently 45,810 Kisan Credit Card (KCC) holders in Hamirpur district. The meeting also discussed how banks can increase this number through better strategies.
The DC told banks to focus on expanding KCC coverage so that more farmers can get loans and crop insurance. He also asked the Agriculture Department and insurance companies to promote the scheme widely and hold awareness camps.
