According to the complainants, VIP “privileged” tickets for pre-Puja preview shows were allegedly sold at exorbitant prices by illegally using UNESCO’s name and logo, despite the organisation having no involvement in any such commercial activity. The foundation claims that this created a misleading impression of official endorsement.

A major controversy has erupted over the alleged misuse of UNESCO’s name in connection with the sale of “preview show” and “privileged entry” tickets for Durga Puja in Kolkata. Five persons, including former state minister and noted musician Indranil Sen and his wife Madhuchhanda Sen, have been accused of orchestrating the alleged racket.

A detailed written complaint was lodged on Monday afternoon with the Kolkata Police Commissioner, the Director General of State Police, and the Bowbazar Police Station. The complaint was filed by Jaydeep Mukhopadhyay and Saguna Mukhopadhyay, who head the Meghdoot Foundation.

Apart from Sen and his wife, the complaint names three others— Dhrubajyoti Basu (Shubho), Sayantan Moitra, and Rajan Chattopadhyay.

The complainants have submitted documentary evidence to support their allegations, including official emails and legal documents, which reportedly confirm that UNESCO has no connection with the ticket sales or related commercial ventures. The complaint alleges that the entire operation was built on fraudulent representation.

The issue has gained prominence particularly after UNESCO granted international recognition to Kolkata’s Durga Puja as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. The complainants allege that certain individuals exploited this recognition to establish an illicit commercial network aimed at generating large profits during the festive season.

It is further alleged that a scheme was devised to sell bulk tickets for early access to Puja pandals — allowing “privileged” visitors to view idols before the general public — at high prices.

As of now, Lalbazar police headquarters has not issued any official statement regarding the allegations. However, police sources said that the submitted documents are being examined, and further action will be taken based on the findings.
