Five electrocuted to death in Hyderabad Janmashtami procession

The Telangana government has announced an ex-gratia of ₹5 lakhs each to the families of those who lost their lives in the electrocution during a Janmashtami procession in the state. The government has also assured full medical support for the injured. State IT & Industries Minister, Duddilla Sridhar Babu, made the announcement on Monday.

 

A festival procession in Hyderabad ended in tragedy late on Sunday, 17 August, when five people were electrocuted and four others injured during the Sri Krishna Shobha Yatra in Gokul Nagar, Ramanthapur, an area under the jurisdiction of the Uppal police station.

The incident occurred around midnight during the final stage of the Janmashtami celebrations. According to police, the vehicle carrying a decorated chariot broke down, and as a group of youths pushed it, the chariot came into contact with an overhead high-tension wire. The live wire instantly electrocuted several people.

Locals shifted the victims to nearby hospitals. However, five of them were declared dead on arrival. The deceased were identified as Krishna Yadav (21), Srikanth Reddy (35), Suresh Yadav (34), Rudra Vikas (39), and Rajendra Reddy (45). Their bodies were subsequently taken to the Gandhi Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

Among the four injured, one is undergoing treatment at Matrix Hospital, another was shifted to a private facility in Nampally, and two others are being treated at local hospitals. Doctors said they were stable.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the mishap. As per the preliminary reports, inadequate precautions near overhead power lines may have led to the tragedy.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and BC Welfare and Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar have expressed shock and offered condolences to the bereaved families. Prabhakar, who inquired about the condition of the injured, instructed officials to ensure they receive the best possible medical care. He also called for greater vigilance around power lines during religious processions, particularly during the monsoon season.

Bharat Rashtra Samithi Working President KT Rama Rao called the incident “deeply saddening” and urged the government to support the victims’ families and implement preventative measures to avoid similar accidents. He said, “It is extremely sad that five people lost their lives due to electric shock in this procession held as part of the Sri Krishna Janmashtami celebrations. It is heartbreaking that Krishna Yadav, Srikanth Reddy, Suresh Yadav, Rudra Vikas, and Rajendra Reddy died in this tragedy. I express my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and appeal to the government to support them. I sincerely wish the speedy recovery of the four people who are seriously injured. Appropriate precautions should be taken to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.”
