At least five migrant workers were killed and 12 others injured after a heavy-duty crane collapsed onto a shed at a cement brick manufacturing unit near Shankarpally mandal in Telangana’s Ranga Reddy district on Monday evening, police said.
Those deceased have been identified as Mukesh and Nagendra Mathur from Jharkhand, Ali Hussain and Sajin from Bihar, and Sonu from Uttar Pradesh.
According to co-workers, the incident occurred in Mahalingapuram village. Around 17 workers employed at an industrial unit associated with NCC Limited had taken shelter inside a shed during heavy rain and strong winds in the afternoon.
The unit manufactures iron sheets used in infrastructure projects such as flyovers, railway platforms, and trains. At the time of the incident, cranes were being used to load these sheets onto vehicles for dispatch.
Officials said that due to strong gusty winds, two cranes stationed nearby collided with each other, causing one to topple onto the shed where the workers had gathered. Several workers were trapped under the debris.
Police and rescue teams rushed to the site and shifted the injured to nearby hospitals in Shankarpally and Chevella. Three workers died while being transported to the hospital, while two others succumbed to their injuries during treatment.
Twelve injured workers are currently undergoing treatment, with two reported to be in critical condition. A case has been registered, police confirmed.
Local MLA Kale Yadaiah visited the site to assess the situation. Telangana Labour Minister Vivek Venkatswamy also visited and held discussions with company representatives.
The minister stated that steps are being taken to provide a permanent job to one member of each deceased worker’s family. He added that the company has assured a steady income arrangement for the affected families and will bear all medical expenses of the injured workers until full recovery.
