Veteran politician and former minister Kewal Singh Pathania passed away at the age of 88 late on Wednesday night in Nurpur. He had been unwell for some time, and his health deteriorated further in the evening.
He was rushed to Nurpur Hospital for treatment but could not be revived.
The news of his demise was formally announced in the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Thursday morning by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Expressing his condolences, Sukhu described Pathania’s passing as a significant loss for the state and acknowledged his contributions to the political landscape of Himachal Pradesh.
Legislators and leaders from across party lines paid tribute to the late leader, recognizing his long-standing service to the people.
A seasoned politician, Pathania had a distinguished career spanning multiple decades. He was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Nurpur in Kangra district three times. His political journey began in 1972 when he won as an Independent candidate. He later contested and won the same seat in 1990 under the Janata Dal banner.
In 1994, he was given a Congress ticket from Jwalamukhi in Kangra district, and upon his victory, he was appointed as the Transport Minister of Himachal Pradesh.
Pathania was widely regarded as a leader of integrity, known for his straightforward approach and commitment to public service. Throughout his political career, he worked toward the development of his constituency and played a crucial role in shaping the transport sector during his ministerial tenure.
His passing marks the end of an era in Himachal Pradesh politics, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and principled leadership. He is survived by his family, friends, and supporters who remember him as a statesman devoted to the welfare of the people.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon, with political leaders, colleagues, and well-wishers expected to gather to pay their final respects.
