A tragic rail accident claimed the lives of four BJP supporters and left another critically injured in West Bengal’s Nadia district early Saturday, just hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to attend an administrative meeting and address a public rally in Taherpur.

According to police and local sources, around 40 BJP supporters from Murshidabad had travelled by bus early morning to attend the Prime Minister’s programme in the Ranaghat Lok Sabha constituency. Five of them reportedly got down from the bus near the railway tracks between Taherpur and Badkulla stations to relieve themselves.

At that time, a fast-moving train on the Krishnanagar-Ranaghat line approached the area, but could not be spotted by the individuals due to dense fog, leading to the mishap.

Three people died on the spot, while two others were rescued in a critical condition and rushed to hospital. Doctors later declared one of the injured dead. The condition of another injured person is stated to be critical.

Police sources confirmed that all four deceased were residents of the Barwan police station area in Murshidabad district. The bodies have been recovered and taken to the Krishnanagar Government Railway Police (GRP) station for further legal procedures.

An investigation into the circumstances leading to the accident is underway.
