Four persons lost their lives and five others were injured after a speeding truck crashed into three vehicles near Gharaunda on National Highway-44 on Wednesday morning. The deceased are yet to be identified, police said.
The accident took place around 9 am when a truck moving towards Gharaunda lost control, crossed the divider, and entered the opposite lane. It first hit a Punjab Roadways bus and then crushed a motorcycle and a car. Four people died on the spot and several bus passengers were hurt.
An eyewitness said four people lost their lives in minutes. Another eyewitness, Jagdish, said the truck suddenly crossed the divider, hit the bus, then the motorcycle, and dragged a car underneath it. The car was totally crushed, and the truck overturned near the service lane railing, leaving the area covered with twisted metal. People screamed for help as the wreckage settled.
Gharaunda SHO Inspector Deepak reached the spot with his team and sent the injured to the hospital. The truck driver was rescued by breaking the windshield. Two passengers were trapped inside the crushed car and had to be freed using cutting tools.
Police have started a probe, and the bodies were sent to Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College. Officers said the scale of damage suggests that overspeeding was a major factor.
“We are investigating the reasons behind the accident,” the SHO said.
