Security forces gunned down four Naxals and a police constable was martyred during an intense encounter in Chhattisgarh’s Abujhmaad regionthat started on Saturday evening.
The hours-long gunfight occurred as a joint team of police, DRG, STF, and CRPF forces conducted an anti-Naxal operation in the dense forested area, a known stronghold of insurgents.
The gunfight, which lasted several hours, occurred as joint security teams comprising personnel from Narayanpur, Dantewada, Jagdalpur, and Kondagaon districts, along with the Special Task Force (STF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), launched an anti-Naxal operation in the region.
The operation recovered automatic weapons, including AK-47 rifles and self-loading rifles (SLRs), from the Naxalites. The confrontation unfolded in the rugged terrain of Abujhmaad, a long-standing Naxal stronghold that straddles Narayanpur and Dantewada districts.
“Intermittent exchanges of fire have been reported since yesterday evening,” a senior police officer stated.
Abujhmaad, known for its treacherous topography and unsurveyed expanse larger than Goa, has been a safe haven for Naxals since the 1980s.
However, security forces have intensified their operations in recent years, claiming to have dismantled over 50 per cent of Naxalite strongholds in the area.
In 2024 alone, nearly 100 Naxalites were eliminated in Abujhmaad. A significant operation in October last year resulted in the death of 31 Naxals, marking one of the largest counter-insurgency strikes in the region's history.
Security personnel continue their vigilance in Abujhmaad as the government presses forward with its efforts to curb Naxal activity in Chhattisgarh.
