Four members of a family lost their lives, and five others were injured in a tragic road accident early Friday morning on National Highway 19 at Ratanpur in Singur, Hooghly district of West Bengal.
According to police sources, the victims were part of a group returning to Dankuni after performing ‘pindadan’ rituals in Gaya. The group, comprising family members and relatives, was travelling in a matador van when the accident occurred.
Preliminary reports suggest that the vehicle lost control and rammed into the rear of a stationary dumper truck parked along the highway. The impact of the collision left the vehicle severely mangled, causing critical injuries to all occupants, including the driver.
Police personnel rushed to the spot upon receiving information and launched rescue operations. The injured were immediately taken to the Singur Trauma Care Centre, where doctors declared four people dead.
The deceased have been identified as Paritosh Kirtaniya (59), Kajal Kirtaniya (55), and their daughters Phuli Mukherjee (33) and Mithu Bag (31), all residents under Dankuni Police Station limits.
Of the remaining injured, five were later shifted to the sub-divisional hospital for advanced treatment, while one child was discharged.
Police are investigating the circumstances leading to the accident, including the presence of the stationary truck on the highway.
