The trial in the rape and murder of an on-duty woman doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has started after prime accused Sanjay Roy who was produced before a Kolkata court on Monday claimed that he was falsely framed in the matter and alleged that the former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal has conspired the whole thing against him.
While Roy was being taken from the Sealdah Court after the hearing, he from the police van shouted at the reporters, stating that it was the former CP who had conspired and framed him.
Adding to the claim, Roy said that there were other big faces related to the case and that he was being threatened.
“Vineet Goyal (erstwhile Kolkata Police Commissioner) is the one who conspired the whole thing and framed me…. They had threatened me and there were other big officers in it,” Roy said.
On November 4, Sealdah Court framed charges against Sanjay Roy in connection with the rape and murder case.
The charges were framed under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and the trial took place on Monday.
This case has drawn attention from people both across and outside the country owing to its nature.
The court’s decision, thus, marks a major step in the legal proceedings against the accused.
In the wake of this shocking incident, junior doctors have called for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take strict action and ensure capital punishment for those responsible.
Medics affirmed that the protests will continue until justice is served.
At present, IPS officer Manoj Kumar Verma was appointed as the new Commissioner of Police (CP) for Kolkata, following the removal of Vineet Kumar Goyal from the position.
The decision comes after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee agreed to the demands made by junior doctors to seek justice for the rape and murder incident that unfolded on August 9 in Kolkata, West Bengal.
