Jadavpur University finds itself embroiled in yet another controversy as fresh allegations of ragging have surfaced on Friday.
A second-year postgraduate student from the Department of Film Studies accused fellow students of subjecting him to severe harassment, including verbal abuse, confinement, and threats. In an email to university authorities, he detailed his ordeal, which took place at the university’s main hostel on March 18.
According to the complainant, he was verbally harassed and forced to issue a public apology on social media for his previous stance against ragging. The student further alleged that his mother was the target of obscene remarks and was even threatened with rape. His primary accusations are against two undergraduate engineering students, although he claimed several others later joined in the act. He was reportedly locked in a room for nearly four hours during the incident.
The student alleged in his complaint that he was targeted for his participation in the protests following the tragic death of a first-year student in 2023, a case widely believed to have been caused by ragging. That incident had sparked intense student movements across the campus, with many demanding strict action against ragging and better safety measures.
Responding to the complaint, Jadavpur University authorities have taken immediate action. Interim Vice-Chancellor Bhaskar Gupta stated, "We have already formed an inquiry committee. Such incidents will not be tolerated. An investigation is underway."
This latest case has reignited concerns about student safety and the effectiveness of anti-ragging measures at Jadavpur University, which has faced repeated controversies over such issues. Authorities are under pressure to ensure that strict actions are taken against the perpetrators and that the campus remains a safe environment for students.
