As North India prepares for the onset of the summer season, the high-altitude regions of Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district have been witnessing heavy snowfall since Sunday night. The sudden spell of snow has once again brought winter-like conditions to the Himalayan region.
Due to the intense snowfall, the temple premises of Shri Badrinath Dham, along with the surrounding Neelkanth Parvat and Narayan Parvat, are now covered in a thick white blanket of snow, creating extremely cold landscape.
The region has also recorded a sharp fall in temperatures. As a result, severe cold conditions have returned to Badrinath and nearby lower-altitude areas.
Earlier, on January 28, the holy town of Kedarnath, located deep in the upper Himalayas, experienced extreme winter weather. Nearly three to four feet of snow covered the shrine, while temperatures plunged to around minus 16 degrees Celsius.
As per the Rudraprayag district administration, continuous snowfall across the high Himalayan areas left the sacred town of Kedarnath completely blanketed in snow. At the shrine itself, nearly three to four feet of snow accumulated, while temperatures dropped below minus 16 degrees Celsius.
Despite the harsh weather conditions, personnel from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Rudraprayag Police continued patrolling around the temple premises and other sensitive areas to ensure safety and security.
Even in biting cold and icy winds, security personnel conducted regular patrols around the shrine and nearby locations, staying alert despite the challenging weather conditions.
Officials from the Rudraprayag district administration and the police department said that although the terrain is difficult, the morale of the security forces remains high. Security arrangements at Kedarnath Dham are fully in place and functioning smoothly.
Meanwhile, the portals of Shri Kedarnath Dham are scheduled to reopen for devotees on April 22 at 8:00 am. The reopening date was officially announced on the occasion of Mahashivratri.
