Gangotri, Yamunotri Highways blocked in Uttarkashi.

The Gangotri National Highway has been blocked near Dharasu Purana Thana and Sonagad, while the Yamunotri Highway is also closed near Kuthnaur and Naradchatti, the Uttarkashi Police said.

The authorities are working to clear the roads and reopen these important highways.

On Wednesday, two people lost their lives after debris fell from a mountain on the Gangotri Highway in Dabrani, Uttarkashi. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had expressed grief over the incident, calling it “extremely sad news".

In a post on X, he said "The extremely sad news has been received of the death of two people in an incident of debris falling from the mountain on the Gangotri Highway in the Dabrani area (Uttarkashi)."

"I pray to God that the souls of the departed find a place at His divine feet and that the grieving families are granted the strength to bear this immense sorrow. Om Shanti!" the post further stated.

Meanwhile, after the recent cloudburst in Dharali–Harsil, rescue and relief work is being carried out on a war footing. District Magistrate Prashant Arya has been inspecting the damaged areas of Harsil, Dharali and the Gangotri National Highway. He has directed BRO, PWD and other agencies to clear landslides and restore smooth movement on the route.

The cloudburst on August 5 has badly affected people’s lives in these areas. The administration is working round the clock to restore electricity, water supply, health facilities, communication and food supplies.

On Sunday, DM Arya inspected the restoration work near Dabrani and instructed officials to use every resource available for quick repairs. Earlier, the administration had also airlifted critically ill patients from Dharali and nearby border areas to the district hospital using an MI-17 helicopter.
