The Sikkim government has unveiled an ambitious plan to introduce a state-of-the-art aerial ropeway system in Gangtok to tackle rising urban congestion and boost tourism.
The announcement came during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, where officials from the Urban Development Department (UDD) and key stakeholders deliberated on the project’s implementation under the Sikkim Ropeway Act, 2023.
The initiative seeks to transform Gangtok’s transport infrastructure by providing a sustainable and efficient commuting alternative.
The city has been grappling with mounting traffic congestion due to the increasing number of private vehicles and limited road capacity.
The ropeway, named Golden Jubilee Cable Car to mark Sikkim’s 50th year of statehood, is expected to ease the pressure on road networks while enhancing connectivity and adding scenic appeal to the urban landscape.

During the meeting, UDD officials presented a detailed briefing on the project’s necessity and feasibility, citing extensive traffic studies and groundwork assessments.
The ropeway system will be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with a revenue-sharing framework and annual fixed financing arrangement.
Describing the proposed system as eco-friendly, officials said it would offer a picturesque and efficient transport option for both residents and tourists.
The initiative aligns with Sikkim’s commitment to sustainable urban development and innovative transport solutions.
With its dual focus on reducing road congestion and boosting tourism, observers expect that the ropeway project would be a transformative step towards improving urban mobility in Gangtok.
