Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla on Tuesday called upon all political parties to prioritise the fight against drug abuse over self-promotion, emphasising that saving the Himachal Pradesh’s future must take precedence over politics.

Flagging off a large-scale anti-drug awareness rally from Barrier Chowk in Indora, Kangra district, the governor announced a new initiative aimed at higher education institutions. Under the directive, students will now be required to submit an affidavit at the time of admission, pledging to abstain from drug use. Any violation of this pledge will attract disciplinary action.

“All political parties must first campaign to save Himachal before promoting themselves. Only by eradicating drugs can we preserve the rich cultural heritage of our state,” Governor Shukla said in an official statement.

Praising the powerful participation of students, Shukla said their collective voice had sent a powerful message across the state. He noted that the Drug-Free Himachal campaign, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has grown into a grassroots movement with increasing community involvement.

The governor also highlighted the role of parents, acknowledging their efforts in helping rehabilitate their children caught in the grip of addiction. He encouraged students to paste anti-drug posters outside their homes to spread awareness within their communities.

Expressing concern over the rising drug problem in neighboring Punjab, Shukla pointed out that many young people are failing military recruitment tests due to drug-related health issues.

Commending the state government for passing a strong anti-drug law in the Assembly, Shukla said he was committed to leading the fight from the front. “As the constitutional head of the state, I have stepped out of Raj Bhavan to act as a guardian, taking this movement to every corner of Himachal Pradesh,” he said.
