Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta urged young scientists to focus on research that directly benefits farmers and improves their economic condition. He emphasised the need to inculcate a scientific temperament among students, saying it would help promote self-reliance, enhance agricultural productivity and strengthen the national economy.
Addressing the 17th convocation of CSK Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University, Palampur, virtually from Lok Bhavan on Thursday, the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the university, congratulated postgraduate students and gold medal winners. He described the convocation as a significant milestone marking the transition from academic learning to practical application and called upon students to remain mindful of their responsibilities, towards society, the state and the nation.
Highlighting the university’s legacy, Gupta said its alumni have made significant contributions in various fields both in India and abroad. He expressed satisfaction that the institution continues to remain relevant through the achievements of its students and faculty members.
The Governor noted that nearly 90 per cent of Himachal’s rural population depends on agriculture and allied sectors, with around 62 per cent engaged in the sector. Agriculture contributes nearly 9.4 per cent to the state’s economy, he said, underlining the importance of research and innovation in the sector.
Appreciating the university’s achievements, he said they reflect excellence in research, innovation and progressive leadership, along with a strong commitment to rural development, social progress and nation-building.
Expressing confidence in the institution’s future, Gupta said the university would continue to play a key role in promoting education, research and innovation in the country. He stressed that scientific research must extend beyond laboratories to reach farmers in the fields, ensuring tangible and practical benefits.
Earlier, President Droupadi Murmu was scheduled to confer degrees on postgraduate medal winners at the convocation. However, her visit was cancelled at the last moment due to bad weather. The Governor also attended the programme virtually for the same reason.
