Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on Thursday that start-ups hold the key to the region’s overall economic development in the years ahead.
“We aim to create opportunities for the young generation so that a start-up and entrepreneurship culture thrives in the Union Territory,” he said.
During a brief media interaction here, he added, “A beginning towards building an entrepreneurial culture has started, the foundation has been laid, and now we need to work towards achieving the stated goals.”
“The government will support innovative ideas and make necessary policy changes to enable the younger generation to become job providers rather than job seekers,” Omar said.
Despite constant efforts, it is impossible to solve the unemployment crisis through government jobs alone; people need to explore new avenues and ideas to contribute to the government’s development vision for Jammu and Kashmir.
He expressed disappointment over recent attacks on Kashmiri vendors outside the Union Territory and remarked, “Unlike other states in this country, I cannot tell my people to go outside and establish businesses, because some fringe elements are taking law and order into their own hands and assaulting Kashmiri people.”
What happened in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand has forced Kashmiris to turn their vision inwards rather than outwards. “We must create businesses and start-ups here in Jammu and Kashmir only,” he said.
When asked about recent remarks by a party MLA suggesting the dissection of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar replied, “The remarks made by certain MLAs are their private matters; the party does not endorse or support what anyone says in a personal capacity.”
Towards the end of the interaction, he said his government was working to revive a centrally sponsored economic package for Jammu and Kashmir to establish factories and businesses.
