The long wait for reptile enthusiasts has finally ended, as two green anacondas have arrived at Alipore Zoo in Kolkata. The Amazonian giants reached the zoo recently and are currently under quarantine. Once their health and adaptation to the new environment are confirmed, they will be transferred to Enclosure No. 30 for public viewing.
According to sources, the snakes were brought from the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre in Chennai. On August 4, a three-member team from the State Forest Department and Alipore Zoo travelled to Chennai to collect them. The team returned to Kolkata on August 8.
The two snakes, each around 2.5 metres, are only four months old. Zoo officials said if they adapt well to their new habitat, two more green anacondas may be brought in future.
In exchange for the anacondas, Alipore Zoo sent six animals to the Madras Crocodile Bank, including three iguanas and three conch snakes. Visitors from across Kolkata and beyond are already flocking the zoo, eagerly awaiting the reptiles’ public debut.

Meanwhile, Alipore Zoo has introduced new facilities for visitors. A free cloakroom service, operational from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is now available under CCTV surveillance.
“Visitors will receive a token upon depositing their belongings, which must be presented for collection. The zoo has advised against storing valuables such as cash, jewellery, electronics and fragile items, noting that it will not be responsible for loss or damage,” said an official. “Additionally, a battery-powered vehicle has been introduced to deliver food efficiently to the animals, from tigers to lions, ensuring smoother operations for zoo staff,” he added.
