Governor of Sikkim, Om Prakash Mathur, interacts with students.

On Monday, the Governor of Sikkim, Om Prakash Mathur, flagged off the National Integration Tour – Buddhist Circuit at Raj Bhavan. The tour is organised by the Trishakti Corps of the Indian Army. Its goal is to promote national unity and give students from Sikkim the chance to explore India’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage.

The tour will involve 20 students from the Government Secondary School Karbey in Namchi District. These students have never travelled outside the state.

Accompanied by two teachers, they will visit important Buddhist pilgrimage sites across India. The 10-day journey will take them to Nalanda, Rajgir, Gaya, Varanasi, Sarnath, Kushinagar, Sravasti, and Lucknow. The group will return to Bengdubi at the end of the tour. Major Anand Mohan Singh of the Indian Army will lead the delegation.

At the flag-off ceremony, Governor Mathur highlighted the educational benefits of the tour. He encouraged the students to broaden their perspectives and gain a deeper understanding of India’s diverse cultures. The Governor also presented travel bags and mementos to the students. This gesture was meant to inspire and motivate them on their journey.

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 17th Mountain Division, MS Rathore, and Commissioner-cum-Secretary to the Governor, Jitendra Raje. Officials from the Indian Army and Raj Bhavan were also present.

The National Integration Tour — Buddhist Circuit is a significant initiative. It aims to bring young people together from different parts of India, fostering unity through shared cultural experiences. The tour will not only expose the students to key Buddhist sites but also allow them to experience the diversity of India’s religious and cultural heritage.

The flag-in ceremony for the tour will be held at the Sukna Headquarters Corps on 6 February 2025. This will mark the end of what promises to be an enriching and educational experience for the students.
