The new measure aims to shift accountability directly onto individual drivers.

In a bid to enhance road safety and ensure greater accountability among drivers, traffic authorities in Guwahati have made it mandatory for drivers of Green Buses to prominently display their driving licences on the front windshields of their vehicles.

The decision comes in response to repeated instances of traffic rule violations involving green buses. Officials said that penalising the vehicles alone was proving ineffective, particularly as these buses are operated under government agencies. The new measure aims to shift accountability directly onto individual drivers.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Jayanta Sarathi Bora stated that the issue was discussed during a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee, chaired by the District Commissioner. Following detailed deliberations, the committee approved the rule requiring drivers to keep their licences visibly displayed for easy identification during enforcement drives.

With the implementation of the directive, traffic personnel can now quickly identify drivers responsible for violations. During enforcement checks, officers photograph the displayed licence and forward the details to the relevant authorities of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) or the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC). These details are then used to initiate departmental action against the concerned driver.

Traffic officials said the initiative has already begun yielding positive results, as the visible display of licences has encouraged drivers to adhere more strictly to traffic regulations. Authorities view this step as part of a broader strategy to strengthen compliance with road safety norms and ensure safer travel for passengers and other road users.

Officials further added that joint monitoring by the traffic police and transport departments will continue on a regular basis. Drivers found violating traffic rules may face strict disciplinary action, underscoring the administration’s commitment to maintaining discipline and safety on Guwahati’s roads.
