Halwara airport nears launch, boost for Ludhiana by April 30

The final touches to the project are expected to be completed by April 30, marking a significant moment for the region.

News Arena Network - Ludhiana - UPDATED: April 10, 2025, 04:46 PM - 2 min read

The Rs 50-cr much-awaited airport project took over three years and missed at least 14 deadlines.

Senior BJP leader Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal shared a sense of pride and enthusiasm as he announced that Ludhiana is poised for a transformative milestone with the near completion of the much-anticipated International Airport at Halwara.

The final touches to the project are expected to be completed by April 30, marking a significant moment for the region. Grewal described the development as a symbol of hope, progress, and prosperity, attributing the achievement to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the commitment of the Central BJP Government, and the consistent efforts of the Union Civil Aviation Ministry.

While addressing the media from his residence on Barewal Road in Ludhiana, Grewal emphasised that the airport would not only uplift Ludhiana’s business and industrial community but also benefit future generations by providing much-needed international connectivity.

He lauded the coordination between local and central authorities and particularly acknowledged Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain for his tireless collaboration with the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Airports Authority of India (AAI) in completing the remaining 10 percent of work.

According to Grewal, all departments involved, including the Public Works Department (PWD) and other central agencies, are working with focused intent to overcome the final operational challenges.

The airport, temporarily named Halwara Airport, has already been assigned its ICAO code (VIHX) and is awaiting its IATA code, which is currently under process with the Indian Air Force.

This upcoming airport will serve as a modern replacement for the aging Sahnewal facility and is expected to emerge as a strategic aviation hub for Punjab and neighboring regions. Grewal stressed that for a city like Ludhiana—considered the industrial engine of Punjab and home to more than 4 million people—international air connectivity is not just a convenience but a rightful necessity.

The airport is expected to significantly enhance trade, boost exports, generate employment, and connect the city with global markets.

Work on the final elements such as fire safety clearances, runway markings, perimeter wall construction, signage installation, and advanced security systems is currently in its final phase. Air India has already expressed interest in launching flight operations from the new airport. Once the terminal is officially handed over to AAI, the bidding process for other commercial airlines is set to begin.

Grewal extended heartfelt gratitude to AAI Chairman Vipin Kumar and the Indian Air Force for their sustained cooperation and commitment in realising this long-awaited national infrastructure project.

He stated that April 30 would mark the beginning of a new chapter for Ludhiana and called upon the citizens to unite and take pride in what he called a "gift of the Modi Government" to the people of Punjab. He described it as the dawn of a new era for the region, underscoring the airport’s potential to transform Ludhiana into a global gateway.
