Haryana Assembly erupts as BJP, Cong MLAs clash over jobs

The accusations, which referred to a past court ruling, led to a sharp rebuttal from Congress legislators, eventually prompting them to stage a walkout.

Budget session of Haryana Assembly begins without Leader of Opposition in House.

The Haryana Assembly on Tuesday turned into a battleground of heated exchanges and uproar as BJP MLAs raised allegations of irregularities in government job recruitments during the previous Congress-led administration.

The accusations, which referred to a past court ruling, led to a sharp rebuttal from Congress legislators, eventually prompting them to stage a walkout.

The commotion erupted at the very beginning of the Zero Hour when BJP MLA O P Yadav cited a court verdict concerning a 2008 police recruitment drive conducted under the Congress government. According to Yadav, a candidate who had topped the selection process was unfairly denied the job, which was instead awarded to another individual. His remarks immediately drew strong objections from Congress legislators, who engaged in a verbal confrontation with the ruling party members.

Supporting Yadav’s claims, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mahipal Dhanda accused the previous Congress government, led by then-Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, of favoritism in public sector appointments. He asserted that jobs were not awarded based on merit but were influenced by political bias. Notably, Hooda was not present in the Assembly during the heated exchanges.

As the situation escalated, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini intervened, emphasising that the court had confirmed the injustice in the 2008 recruitment process. He expressed dismay over how favouritism had allegedly influenced job appointments during the Congress regime, calling the issue a serious injustice to deserving candidates.

Haryana Minister Anil Vij also joined the debate, sharply criticising the Congress for what he described as a history of manipulating job appointments for political gains. "This is how they played with the future of our youth," remarked Vij. However, a particular word used by Vij sparked further objections from Congress members, though Vij insisted that his language was not unparliamentary.

Congress MLAs, including Raghuvir Singh Kadian, Kuldeep Vats, and Aftab Ahmed, vocally opposed the BJP’s remarks. The situation intensified when Kadian strongly countered the accusations, prompting several Congress legislators to rush to the Well of the House in protest. Following a brief but intense standoff, they decided to walk out.

Amid the ruckus, Speaker Harvinder Kalyan repeatedly urged the members to maintain decorum, but the situation remained tense. Some BJP legislators responded to the chaos by chanting "Bharat Mata Ki Jai," further fueling the charged atmosphere.

After nearly 20 minutes of disorder, order was finally restored, and the Zero Hour continued as scheduled. The episode underscored the deep political divide between the two parties, with accusations of past governance failures continuing to dominate the legislative discourse.
