A college student from Haryana has been arrested on suspicion of espionage and leaking sensitive information. This latest arrest follows closely on the heels of a Haryana-based YouTuber being taken into custody for allegedly sharing intelligence with Pakistani agencies.
Devendra Singh Dhillon, a 25-year-old political science student at Khalsa College in Patiala, was apprehended in Kaithal on May 12. The authorities claim he uploaded images of pistols and guns on his Facebook account and also shared photographs of the Patiala military cantonment with Pakistani officers.
During interrogation, it was revealed that Dhillon had travelled to Pakistan via the Kartarpur Corridor and shared confidential information with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Reports indicate that Pakistani agencies invested a significant amount of money to recruit him.
The police have seized Dhillon’s mobile phone, which has been sent for forensic analysis, while his bank records are being examined to trace the flow of funds between him and Pakistani officers.
The crackdown on cross-border espionage comes in the aftermath of a fragile calm that settled along the India-Pakistan border following a ceasefire agreement on May 10. The truce was reached shortly after India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting nine terror hubs in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. These cross-border strikes had further intensified tensions, which had already been escalating since the deadly Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 that claimed 26 civilian lives.
