Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Wednesday described the Punjab and Haryana High Court's intervention on the ongoing dispute over water release by the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) to Haryana as a moral victory for the state.
Addressing a public gathering, the Chief Minister said the court has asked all stakeholders to submit their responses by May 20 regarding the ongoing issue of water release from BBMB to Haryana.
Mann stated that Haryana has already utilised its allocated water quota for the year and would only become eligible for fresh supply after May 21. “Despite the pressure from the Centre, Haryana, and the BBMB, Punjab has successfully defended its rightful share of water. This is a significant win for us,” he asserted.
Reiterating his firm stance, the Chief Minister said that Punjab does not have even a single drop of spare water to share with any other state. He accused Haryana of previously “stealing” water and claimed his government had taken steps to prevent further diversion.
“Our rivers are depleting, and the state urgently needs water to meet its own agricultural and irrigation demands,” Mann said.
The Chief Minister reiterated the state's commitment to safeguarding its natural resources and vowed to take all necessary measures to protect Punjab’s interests.
