Heavy rain forcast in J&K; high alert issued

Since Monday morning, Kashmir valley has received widespread moderate to heavy rains, and it is believed that the same weather conditions are likely to continue for the next 48 hours, officials said.

Following an intense rainfall in the past 24 hours, the local MeT department of Jammu and Kashmir authorities have issued a high alert for several districts over the possibility of cloudbursts and flash floods. As per MeT forecast, there are high chances of heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours with thunderstorms and intense showers across Jammu, Reasi, Udhampur, Rajouri, Poonch, Samba, and Kathua. 

 

Instructions have been issued for the general public to stay away from the the low-lying areas and riverbanks, which could swell in a matter of minutes.

Heavy rains lashed Srinagar, Kupwara, Baramulla, Anantnag, and Pulwama districts, prompting authorities to issue a high alert. The UT government has placed authorities and the public on high alert after the MeT office in Srinagar forecasted more heavy rainfall with chances of flash floods and landslides across several districts. 

 

Officials said deputy commissioners, engineers, police, SDRF, and frontline workers have been directed to remain on the “highest level of preparedness”. Meanwhile, relief camps are being readied, while food, medicines, and drinking water are being stocked in vulnerable areas. 

 

Mountainous districts, including Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban, along with parts of the Kashmir Valley, may also face heavy rainfall with gusty winds, as per the forecast. 

 

From August 20-22, hot and humid conditions are likely to prevail in the region, while some areas of the Jammu division could experience heavy showers, including the Cloudburst hit Kathua, where seven people lost their lives and five more suffered injuries. 

 

Another wet spell is predicted for August 23–25, bringing more rain with the risk of localised cloudbursts and flash floods.
