Incessant rainfall caused damage to several houses in the Mendhar area of Poonch District on Thursday night, officials said on Friday. They said Sanjyot’s ward no. 4 has been worst affected by the rain, where at least six residential houses and a Madrassa (educational institution) suffered extensive damage.
As per eyewitness accounts, rains led to land subsidence amid the ongoing construction of a four-way road through the area. They alleged that the damage could have been prevented had the administration constructed the protective walls.
Confirming the damage to some structures, officials said an assessment would be carried out soon.
“While there are reports about damage to some structures, the exact damage is not known yet and will be known after assessment,” they added.
Meanwhile, similar weather conditions have persisted in the region for the past week.
On July 11, gusty winds and heavy rains caused widespread damage across North and central Kashmir, with several accounts suggesting widespread damage to houses.
Parts of Baramulla, Kupwara, Srinagar, and other areas witnessed damage, as several houses and commercial places, including vehicles, also reported extensive damage.
Director of the Meteorological Department, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, had told reporters, “A spell of light to moderate rain/thunder is likely over many areas of Kashmir Division, Poonch, Rajouri, Ramban, Doda, Reasi, Udhampur, and parts of the Jammu plains during the next few weeks.”
