The administration has decided to close schools in several districts, including Rajouri, Reasi, and Poonch, in view of the heavy rains and adverse weather conditions.

Heavy rains have forced school closures in Jammu after several areas witnessed flash floods and waterlogging, causing damage to structures, officials said on Tuesday.

The administration has decided to close schools in several districts, including Rajouri, Reasi, and Poonch, in view of the heavy rains and adverse weather conditions.

Significant rainfall was recorded between 8 am on Monday and 6 am on Tuesday, MeT officials said, adding that Reasi, Kathua, Samba, and Jammu districts also witnessed heavy rainfall.

Intense rainfall triggered flash floods, landslides, and mudslides at several places. The rainfall severely damaged a high school in Poonch district after a flash flood swept away around 200 feet of adjacent sheds. No loss of life has been reported so far from the ongoing bad weather conditions.

The rainfall has also disrupted traffic due to road blockages across Rajouri district. In Reasi, a landslide at Kandamorh in Tehsil Pouni on Tuesday morning blocked the road. Work to clear the blockade is underway to make the road trafficable, they added.

Meanwhile, the authorities have issued an alert, urging people to stay away from water bodies and avoid trekking on slippery slopes until the weather improves.

The MeT department has forecast rain and thunderstorms across many parts of the Jammu division from August 12-15, with the possibility of heavy showers in some areas. Residents have been advised to stay alert and follow weather advisories, the MeT department said.
