Heavy spell of rains lash Delhi-NCR, IMD red alert for 2 days

Even as the day remained bright and sunny, a sudden spell of heavy rain battered Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Saturday evening with IMD issuing red alert for the next few hours. NCR has witnessed  incessant rain and thunderstorms along with Delhi  this month frequently and the forecast remains for Sunday as well.

After a sunny day, Delhi-NCR witnessed spell of rains on Saturday evening



Even as the day remained bright and sunny, a sudden spell of heavy rain battered Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Saturday evening with IMD issuing red alert for the next few hours. NCR has witnessed  incessant rain and thunderstorms along with Delhi  this month frequently and the forecast remains for Sunday as well.


The weather department updated the map showing regions which are likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall in the coming hours. As the people were enjoying outings and shopping on Sunday, sudden spell of rains caught everyone unawares, even as some took it as relief from sultry humidity. Areas including Lajpat Nagar, RK Puram, Lodhi Road, and Mandir Marg witnessed light showers.According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), today's sky will be mostly overcast in Delhi, with one or two periods of light to moderate rain or thundershowers in numerous locations. In isolated places, an intense period may occur in the afternoon or forenoon.

 

"There is a risk of light to moderate rain or thundershowers throughout the next two days, after another period of very light to light rain is anticipated in the early hours of Sunday," as per the Met Department.According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the national capital air quality index (AQI) stood at 98 at 8 am on August 23, falling in the 'satisfactory' category.According to officials of the Public Works Department, their flood control room received at least 10 complaints on waterlogging during the day, and most of them were cleared within an hour.

 

The IMD has predicted rainfall with gusty winds in areas including Civil Lines, Red Fort, Lajpat Nagar, Narela, Bawana, Alipur and ITO on Saturday evening and Sunday.Meanwhile, the maximum temperature in the city settled at 34.5 degrees Celsius on Saturday, 0.3 notches below the season's average. The minimum temperature stood at 25.7 degrees Celsius, 0.8 notch below the season's average.The relative humidity was recorded at 76 per cent at 5.30 pm.

 

The air quality continued in the "satisfactory" category at 6 pm, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 93, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data showed. According to the CPCB, an AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'.
