Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu met Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday, requesting support for rebuilding roads that were damaged in recent heavy rains, flashfloods, and landslides across the hill state.
Sukhu also raised concerns about delays in several national highway projects in Himachal and asked that construction work begin as soon as possible.
Since the beginning of the monsoon on June 20, the state saw 31 flashfloods, 22 cloudbursts, and 18 landslides, which have badly affected infrastructure and property.
During the meeting, Sukhu urged the Union Minister to include some key roads under the PM Gati Shakti Yojana and emphasised the need for tunnelling in national highway projects to ensure long-term safety and connectivity in hilly areas.
He also spoke about roads that are strategically important from a defence point of view and had already been brought to the attention of the Defence Ministry. Sukhu requested faster action on those.
Additionally, he appealed for the sanctioning of more ropeway projects to help reduce traffic congestion in the state. According to an official statement, Gadkari assured the Chief Minister of all possible support and issued directions to the officers concerned to take necessary action.
