Himachal Pradesh is making significant strides in gender empowerment and early childhood development.
The state has shown a remarkable improvement in its child sex ratio, which has increased from 947 to 964 over the past two years. This positive change reflects the focused and sustained efforts of the state government. According to an official spokesperson, this improvement has laid the foundation for a new series of transformative initiatives launched by the state.
The spokesperson said “One of the most promising of these is the Indira Gandhi Sukh Suraksha Yojna, aimed at supporting girls born into Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. Under this scheme, the government will deposit ₹25,000 with an insurance company at the time of the girl’s birth. The scheme also includes life insurance coverage of ₹2 lakh each for both parents. The insured amount will mature when the girl turns 18, though she may choose to keep it until she reaches the age of 27. This initiative is expected to significantly strengthen the ongoing Beti Hai Anmol Yojana and further encourage the welfare and protection of the girl child.”
To support working women, the government has also decided to construct 13 new hostels for working women across various districts, including Solan, Neeri, Daruhi, Palampur, Luthan, Baddi, Gagret, Nagrota Bagwan, Chanour Industrial Area, and the Medical Devices Park in Solan. To be built at a cost of ₹132 crore, these hostels will address the growing need for safe and affordable accommodation for women in the workforce.
In the education sector, a major reform has been introduced for young learners. All 18,925 Anganwadi Centres across the state will be transformed into Anganwadi Sah Preschools, offering play-based early childhood education to children aged 3 to 6 years. Anganwadi workers will be trained to deliver this foundational learning, ensuring children a strong educational edifice.
The spokesperson said these forward-thinking measures reflect the state government’s commitment to inclusive development and social welfare. With focused schemes for girls, women, and children, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s visionary leadership is paving the way for a stronger and more equitable future for the women of the state.
