Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda on Monday called for a fair and independent probe into the suicide of Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar. He said it was the government’s duty to restore public trust in the system.
“This will only happen when justice is served,” the Rohtak MP told mediapersons after meeting Kumar’s wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, at her official residence in Sector 24, Chandigarh.
Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer aged 52, allegedly shot himself at his Chandigarh residence on October 7. He left behind a “final note” accusing eight senior officers, including Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and former Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya, of harassment and tarnishing his reputation.
On Friday, Chandigarh Police set up a six-member Special Investigation Team to conduct a “prompt, impartial, and thorough” probe into the case.
“The kind of allegations that have been levelled (in Puran Kumar's final note)... justice should be done. That will happen when there is an impartial and independent investigation and the family (of Kumar) is satisfied,” Hooda said.
He added, “A message has to go out that no one can influence the probe as people occupying senior posts have been named as accused. That is why it is important that the probe should be above any suspicion... anyone found guilty in the probe should not be spared.”
“The entire country is looking at the government to ensure that justice is delivered,” Hooda said. He was accompanied by Congress MPs Varun Chaudhry (Ambala) and Satpal Brahamchari (Sonipat).
Two days ago, Hooda had visited late Haryana IPS officer’s family to offer condolences. In his final note, Kumar detailed alleged harassment, including caste-based discrimination, by officers named in the note.
On Saturday, the Haryana government transferred then Rohtak SP Bijarniya. His new posting orders have not yet been issued.
On Sunday, a 31-member panel formed to seek justice for Kumar’s family gave a 48-hour ultimatum to the Chandigarh administration to remove DGP Kapur.
Kumar’s family has refused to give consent for the autopsy and cremation until their demands are addressed, even as the Haryana government tries to persuade Amneet P Kumar.
