HP raises marriageable age of women from 18 to 21 years

The Himachal Pradesh Assembly passed the Child Marriage Prohibition (Himachal  Pradesh  Amendment) Bill 2024, increasing the minimum age for marriage of girls from 18 to 21 years in the state.

 

It is being seen as a crucial step towards changing the legal framework of child marriages in the state.

 

The amendment bill, brought on the first day of the Monsoon session of the HP Assembly, reflects the government’s commitment to protecting the rights of young girls by providing more opportunities for their education and personal development before entering into marriage. 

 

The amendment in the marriage age, which was brought on the recommendations of a committee, aims to ensure better overall health for the girls.

 

The Amendment Bill to Child Marriage Prohibition Act, 2006 was introduced in the Assembly by Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dhani Ram Shandil and was passed unanimously.
