I was fighting for my life, gangrape victim’s numbing words

The victim’s complaint letter not only reflects her firmness against a powerful man under the protection of political privilege, but also narrates her fight for life.

In this photo from June 30, 2025, students stage a protest demanding immediate justice in the alleged gang rape case of a 24-year-old law student in South Calcutta Law College, in Kolkata.

The victim of gangrape at South Kolkata Law College described a harrowing blow-by-blow of the ordeal, starting from the moment she entered the institution to the moment she left, shocked and shattered. The gut-wrenching details of the letter has portrayed a spine-chilling picture of Monojit Mishra, a student-wing leader of the TMC, as a predator stalking his prey within the very campus of the institution.

In a clear testimony, the law-student victim alleged that Monojit threatened to kill her boyfriend and have her parents arrested, if she dared to file a complaint with the police.

“I went outside the room at 10.50 pm. He asked me not to tell anyone. He asked me to tell that we are discussing about the unit inside…..He threatened me that he will kill my boyfriend and arrest my parents…..went outside the college and called my father to come and pick me up. I told him everything but was afraid to come to the police station as I was afraid of Monojit Da’s power. But today I made my mind and writing down my statement,” the complaint letter read.

The victim’s complaint letter not only reflects her firmness against a powerful man under the protection of political privilege, but also narrates her fight for life.

“At a time, I stopped fighting back to get out quickly of the room….I was fighting for life. He also tried to hit me with a hockey stick. I just let myself like a dead body. He finished his penetration, forceful intercourse and left me,” the complaint letter says.

The victim recounted that she had a panic attack and experienced breathing difficulties, prompting her to request an inhaler. The inhaler was given—not to offer her relief, but rather to make her physically capable of enduring the ordeal that followed.

“I told them to bring an inhaler for me. Zaib (co-accused) brought that. I took it and felt better and I packed my things and went outside to escape and saw that they have locked the main gate and the guard was helpless and did not help. Zaib and Pramit (another co-accused) again forcefully took me to the union room. I asked Monojit Da to let me go. I even touched his feet but he didn’t let me go. He instructed Zaib and Pramit to take me to the guard’s room and make the guard sit outside. They did so. They took me to the guard’s room forcefully,” the victim recounted in her complaint.

In the complaint, she also mentioned that her ordeal was videographed and that Monojit threatened to circulate the footage.

Giving a clear indication that the crime was premeditated, the victim said that she was not allowed to go home whenever she wanted under the pretext of political discussions on that day.

“I want justice. Being a law student, I am the victim now. I want justice to be served as soon as possible and I pray before you, kindly take a legal action against Monojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed, Pramit Mukhopadhyay,” the victim concluded.
