IIT Kharagpur, India’s oldest Indian Institute of Technology, will mark its 75th foundation day on August 18 with the release of a special ₹75 commemorative silver coin. The coin, approved by the Union Finance Ministry, will be issued as a collector’s item and will not be used for transactions.
According to the government notification, the commemorative coin will be minted in Kolkata and made of 99.9 per cent silver, weighing 40 grams with a diameter of 44 millimetres. It will be available to collectors at a retail price of ₹7,500.
According to numismatic scholars, this will be the 14th commemorative coin of ₹75 denomination issued in India. Similar coins have been released 13 times earlier to mark significant occasions.

“This ₹75 commemorative silver coin is being brought on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of our IIT Kharagpur. The Government of India has approved it,” said Suman Chakraborty, Director of IIT Kharagpur.
Founded in 1951, IIT Kharagpur is spread across 2,000 acres in West Midnapore and has consistently ranked among India’s premier technological institutions. The release of the commemorative coin is part of the Centre’s initiative to celebrate the institute’s milestone anniversary.
