The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the coastal areas of Karnataka, owing to which the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, HV Darshan, declared a holiday for all schools and anganwadis on August 18.
The suspension of classes in schools applies to all government, private, and government-aided schools. Udupi, Uttara Kannada and Chikkamagaluru districts of Karnataka have been issued similar alerts and advised to keep the schools shut on Monday.
A red alert suggests a high risk of excessive rainfall — more than 204.4 mm in 24 hours — which can lead to flooding, landslides and disruption of daily life. The alert has been in effect since August 17.

The IMD has forecast extremely heavy rainfall for Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts, with Dakshina Kannada also expected to receive excessive rainfall.
Following the red alert period, an "orange alert" has been issued for the three coastal districts for August 19 and 20. An orange alert warns of very heavy rainfall (115.6 mm to 204.4 mm). This weather is being influenced by a developing low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is enhancing monsoon activity over the state.
District administrations have advised residents to stay away from water bodies, avoid low-lying areas, and take all necessary precautions. Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea until at least August 20 due to the high likelihood of strong winds and rough seas.
