News Arena Network - Thiruvananthapuram - UPDATED: May 18, 2024, 05:16 PM - 2 min read

The IMD has forecasted thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds across Kerala from May 19 to 22.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a red alert for select districts in Kerala, with Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, and Idukki bracing for heavy rainfall on May 19 and 20.

Additionally, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, and Ernakulam have been put on orange alert during the same period.

On May 21, nine districts are on orange alert, indicating potential rainfall levels akin to a red alert in some areas.

IMD also forecasts thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds across Kerala from May 19 to 22.

For Saturday, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Malappuram districts are under an orange alert.

A red alert signifies heavy to extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm within 24 hours, while an orange alert indicates very heavy rainfall ranging from 6 cm to 20 cm.

The IMD's prior prediction of very heavy rainfall from May 18 to 20 attributes the phenomenon to the anticipated presence of robust westerly and southwesterly winds in the region.
