A 21-year-old nursing student from Meghalaya was found dead in her hostel room at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal on Wednesday, officials confirmed.
The deceased has been identified as Abiel Sachiana Ch Marak, a fourth-semester student hailing from Rengram in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya. According to police reports, she was discovered hanging in her room.
Concern arose when Abiel failed to respond during the routine morning roll call. Fellow students alerted the authorities, prompting hostel staff to check her room, only to find her hanging. The RIMS administration immediately informed local police.
Personnel from Lamphel Police Station, along with a team from the Manipur Forensic Sciences Department, arrived at the scene to initiate an investigation. Her body was subsequently taken to the RIMS mortuary for autopsy.
While preliminary observations suggest suicide, officials have stated that the definitive cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem examination.
A case has been registered and a detailed investigation is currently in progress.
