An interfaith couple who went to a Bhopal court to register their marriage was attacked by members of right-wing groups, who accused the man of “love jihad” and assaulted him.
The incident happened inside a busy courtroom and was caught on video, which has since spread online.
Police officials said that right-wing groups arrived at the court after being tipped off about the couple’s plans to register their marriage. The man, who is from Narsinghpur, had traveled to Bhopal with the woman, but they could not complete the legal formalities.
Chandra Shekhar Tiwari, president of the Sanskriti Bachao Manch, one of the groups involved, claimed that the man had photos and contact details of multiple Hindu women on his phone and had forced his partner into marriage. The group demanded that the police file rape charges against him.
Bhopal ACP Akshay Chaudhary confirmed the incident and said, "The couple has been placed under police protection. Further action will be taken based on the woman’s statement."
Police have called the woman’s parents, and her statement will be recorded once they arrive.
Chaudhary also mentioned that the couple was asked to appear in court for verification since they belong to different faiths. He added that action will be taken against the attackers based on the man’s statement. So far, no arrests have been made in the case.
