As the electoral fervor grips Assam, an diverse mix of individuals from various walks of life has emerged to contest in the upcoming first phase of polls scheduled for April 19.

From seasoned cultivators and businessmen to retired government employees and full-time politicians, the diverse candidate pool reflects the rich tapestry of Assamese society.

Among the candidates vying for the spotlight are eight nominees, including incumbent BJP MPs Topon Gogoi and Pradan Barua, who seamlessly juggle their roles as cultivators alongside their commitments to full-time politics, as per their submitted affidavits.

Adding to this vibrant mix is Assam Jatiya Parishad president and opposition candidate for Dibrugarh constituency, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, who has maintained his primary occupation as farming, drawing sustenance from the agrarian landscape of the region.

However, the political landscape also boasts stalwarts like Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, BJP's candidate for Dibrugarh, and Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, BJP's nominee for Kaziranga, who explicitly declare their profession as politicians, drawing salaries as Members of Parliament.

Furthermore, the constituency sees an interesting blend of retired professionals, with former government engineers, insurance officials, and private firm workers stepping into the political arena, lending their expertise and experience to the electoral discourse.

Amid this dynamic spectrum, the participation of women candidates adds another layer of diversity.

While Kaziranga parliamentary constituency witnesses the highest number of women candidates, including Roselina Tirkey of the Congress and Anima Deka Gupta, a housewife, the presence of Diluwara Begum Chowdhury, a businesswoman, underlines the evolving role of women in Assam's political landscape.

As the countdown begins for the first phase of polls, with 35 candidates contesting across Kaziranga, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Sonitpur, and Lakhimpur constituencies, Assam braces itself for a democratic spectacle that reflects the aspirations and diversity of its populace.
