On Sunday, police detained several members of the Jammu and Kashmir Handicapped Association (JKHA) after they held a protest march against the government’s lack of support for disabled individuals, officials said.

A large group of JKHA members gathered near the Press Enclave, holding banners and shouting slogans, demanding immediate action from the government to improve their living conditions in Jammu and Kashmir.

The protesters accused successive governments of failing to address their needs. They urged the government to launch a special recruitment drive for qualified disabled individuals and increase the monthly disability pension from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000.

Additionally, they requested low-interest loans with subsidies and job reservations. Their demands also included a 4% reservation in MGNREGA work and representation in assemblies, municipalities, and panchayats.

The association further called for the creation of an advisory board to focus on their socio-economic development and the establishment of separate service counters for disabled individuals in government offices and banks.

As they attempted to march on the main road outside the Press Enclave, police intervened and detained several protesters. However, officials later confirmed that they were released.
