The death toll in the cruise boat capsize at Bargi Dam on the Narmada River in Jabalpur has risen to nine, after five more bodies were recovered early Friday morning. Rescue teams have intensified operations as several passengers are still reported missing.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening when a cruise boat carrying tourists overturned during a sudden and severe storm. According to police, nearly 40 passengers were on board at the time of the mishap.
Superintendent of Police Anjul Mishra said rescue efforts were launched immediately after the accident. “So far, 22 people have been safely evacuated, while search operations are ongoing to locate the missing,” he stated.
Eyewitnesses reported that the tragedy unfolded around 6 pm near Khamariya Island, when strong winds and turbulent waters caused the vessel to lose balance and capsize. Survivors described a scene of panic as the storm intensified without warning.
Mahesh, the boat’s pilot who survived the incident, said he had never encountered such extreme weather in his decade-long career. “The storm was so sudden and powerful that we had no time to react. Many passengers couldn’t even wear life jackets before the boat began to sink,” he said.
Sangeeta Kori, a tourist from Delhi, alleged lapses in safety measures. “Initially, no one was instructed to wear life jackets. They were given out only when the situation worsened,” she told.
Another survivor said large waves struck the vessel, shattering glass windows and causing it to tilt before sinking into the river.
Earlier, officials had reported a lower casualty figure, with four bodies recovered on Thursday night. However, the toll rose after additional recoveries during continued search operations on Friday.
Expressing grief over the tragedy, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav directed officials to expedite rescue efforts and ensure immediate assistance to the affected families. In a statement, he said senior ministers and administrative officials had been instructed to reach the site and oversee operations.
The Chief Minister also announced financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh for the families of each deceased victim.
The Bargi Dam, located about 35 kilometres from Jabalpur, is a popular tourist destination managed by Madhya Pradesh Tourism and offers various water-based recreational activities.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as rescue teams race against time to trace those still missing.
