The Jammu and Srinagar National Highway was shut for traffic early Monday after intense rainfall triggered landslides and shooting stones from hillocks at several places, officials said.
While the traffic is functioning smoothly on the interregional Mughal and Sinthan roads, travellers are advised to follow the lane discipline to avoid congestion, they said.
A traffic advisory issued by the Jammu and Kashmir traffic police stated, “The Jammu-Srinagar highway is closed due to shooting stones at several places. Heavy rains are going on along the highway. All types of vehicular movement have been stopped.”
It also said those planning to travel on the highway should wait till the weather improves and the roads are cleared.

Meanwhile, in a separate advisory by the Director of School Education, Kashmir, schools in the Valley are asked to provide maximum safety to students and staff amid the ongoing inclement weather conditions.
The notification said, “In light of recent cloudburst incidents, all Chief Education Officers and Heads of Institutions (HOIs) are directed to implement the following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure the safety of students and staff.”
The cooperation of all school staff is essential in ensuring that students remain safe under any adverse conditions. Any failure to comply with these directives will be considered a serious lapse.
The notification also warned the school administration that in case any untoward incident occurs due to negligence in implementing safety measures, the sole responsibility shall lie on the shoulders of the concerned head of the institution.
