The launch of much-awaited rail connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India has been hailed as a significant step in improving transport infrastructure and economic integration across the region.
While the train service to Kashmir is in itself a historic milestone, the trade associations have urged the government to design an appropriate policy for balanced regional development.
The new train service, as described by the Indian railways, will provide a much-needed “boost to tourism, travel, and trade.”
“It is a game changer for the economy of Jammu and Kashmir,” said author and commentator Satesh Verma. “Beyond the Valley, areas along the route are also likely to benefit from improved logistics and mobility.”
The rail link is not only poised to enhance transportation for the Kashmir horticulture industry, including apples, walnuts, almonds, and saffron, to markets across India, but will also cut transit time to metros like Mumbai to under 36 hours.
Jammu trader’s president, Neeraj Anand, said, “We congratulate the Prime Minister on this historic step. It will provide Kashmir with all-weather connectivity. But it will inevitably affect business in Jammu. The government must look into this aspect.”

Experts suggest that comprehensive economic planning could ensure that both regions thrive. However, proper planning and a decisive strategy are needed to explore the full potential of the region’s economic prospects.
Dilip Kumar, executive director of Railways, highlighted the train’s economic promise: “Agricultural products from Kashmir will now reach distant markets faster, helping farmers secure better prices. Similarly, direct train access for tourists will boost the entire sector.”
Local officials pointed out that the improved connectivity also addresses long-standing mobility issues. “People from Kashmir no longer need to travel to Jammu to board a train. This improves access, reduces travel costs, and eases everyday life,” said one official.
As the region enters this new phase of connectivity, stakeholders from both Jammu and Kashmir are urging a shared focus from the government while the true potential of the region is explored.
