Assam is likely to host a significant diplomatic engagement next month, with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi expected to arrive in the state on July 1 for a three-day visit. The proposed trip is expected to further strengthen India-Japan ties while placing the Northeast at the centre of growing strategic and economic cooperation between the two countries.

According to reports by Japanese media outlets, preparations are underway for Takaichi's visit to India, during which she is expected to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Assam is likely to be a key stop on the itinerary, with the two leaders expected to hold their second in-person meeting in the state.

According to the report, Assam is being considered as a key stop during the visit, where Takaichi is expected to hold her second face-to-face meeting with Modi. The discussions are likely to focus on expanding cooperation between India and Japan in areas such as security, economic engagement and strategic partnerships.

The proposed talks are expected to build on the India-Japan joint vision for the next decade announced during Modi's visit to Japan last year. Officials are also expected to discuss a range of regional and global issues, including energy security and efforts to strengthen critical mineral supply chains amid geopolitical uncertainties and continuing tensions in the Middle East.

The report said Takaichi is keen to deepen bilateral ties through regular reciprocal visits by the leaders of the two countries, reflecting the growing importance of the India-Japan partnership in the Indo-Pacific region.

If the visit materialises, it would mark a significant diplomatic event for Assam and the wider Northeast, a region that has increasingly figured in India's Act East policy and efforts to enhance connectivity and economic links with East and Southeast Asia.

The proposed visit also carries symbolic significance. In December 2019, a planned visit by former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to Guwahati for an India-Japan summit was called off amid widespread protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Assam.

As of Sunday, the Assam government had not issued any official statement confirming Takaichi's proposed visit. Officials familiar with the matter said discussions were still underway and details of the programme were yet to be finalised.
