A shocking incident has rocked Jhargram after a police officer allegedly shot dead his parents before attempting suicide late on Wednesday night. The accused, Sub-Inspector (SI) Joydev Chatterjee (32) of the Junglemahal Battalion, is currently battling for his life at Jhargram Medical College after sustaining a gunshot wound to the neck.
According to police sources, the incident occurred at a rented house in the Jhargram Police Line area, where Joydev lived with his parents. The deceased have been identified as Debabrata Chatterjee (62) and Shampa (50).
Residents reported hearing gunshots and immediately informed the police. On reaching the spot, officers found Joydev and his parents lying in pools of blood. While doctors declared Debabrata and Shampa dead on arrival, Joydev was admitted in critical condition.
"Preliminary investigations suggest that Joydev killed his parents and turned the firearm on himself after locking the main entrance of the rented house. The exact cause behind the tragedy can only be determined after a thorough probe. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination,” said a senior official of Jhargram police.

Police sources revealed that Joydev, originally from Asansol, had been living in Jhargram for work. He had recently taken leave from September 2 to 4, raising questions about what might have transpired during this period.
Colleagues expressed disbelief at the news. “Sir loved his parents very much. We are all shocked,” said one officer who worked closely with him.
Investigators also learnt that Joydev’s father was suffering from a complicated illness, which may have caused him immense mental stress. Authorities suspect this could have driven him to commit the crime. The incident has created panic and deep curiosity in the area, with locals and colleagues alike struggling to understand why a devoted son and disciplined officer would take such a devastating step.
