The Jharkhand government has made the largest budget allocation for its "Jharkhand Mukhyamantri Maiyan Samman Yojna (JMMSY)" and free electricity scheme, as presented in the State Budget on Monday.
₹18,368 crore set aside for free schemes
Finance Minister Radha Krishan Kishore announced that the government has allocated Rs 13,363.35 crore for JMMSY and Rs 5,005.09 crore for free electricity, totaling Rs 18,368.39 crore.
JMMSY alone makes up 9.19 pc of the total budget
- Free electricity accounts for 3.44%
- Both schemes together represent 12.63% of the total budget
- Development Sectors Get Less Funding
While these free schemes received a significant portion of the budget, some key sectors received less funding in comparison:
- Education – 12.11%
- Rural Development – 11.39%
- Health & Drinking Water – 8.38%
- Agriculture & Water Resources – 4.71%
- Road & Transport – 4.27%
- Police & Disaster Management – 6.82%
- Land Revenue, Labour, Tourism, IT & Others – 6.82%
Women & child development gets 17.47% of budget
The Women, Child Development, and Social Security Department, which runs JMMSY, received ₹22,023.33 crore, 17.47 per cent of the total budget—even higher than education or rural development. The budget has sparked discussions as "freebies" remain a hot topic in India's economic and political debates.
