Continuous rainfall in Kashmir has caused the water level of the Jhelum River to rise. At the same time, several gates of the Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project Dam in Ramban district have been opened to manage the increased flow of water after heavy rain.
Local residents said the Jhelum has risen by nearly one foot since continuous rainfall began on July 23. Authorities have asked people living in low-lying areas and near riverbanks to stay alert and follow all safety instructions issued by the administration.
Dr Ejaz said he was hopeful that the weather would improve in the coming days. Speaking about the rising Jhelum, he said the water level was increasing slowly and there was no immediate reason for concern. However, he warned that heavy rainfall could create problems.
"As for the situation, I believe that God willing, it will improve. By the grace of God, things will get better. There's a forecast of sunshine, God willing. Our hope from Almighty God is for things to improve. The water is rising, but I don't think it will be too much, given the current pattern of the rain. If it rains heavily, then there are chances of some issues," he said.
Dr Ejaz also asked people not to panic. He advised those living near the Jhelum to stay connected with the authorities and keep a close watch on official updates.
"Their best precaution is to stay in touch with the government and pay close attention to any advisories issued. They should follow the instructions provided and not panic. Don't panic over everything," he added.
Iqbal Ahmad, a local resident, said the water level had gone up by around one foot since the previous evening. However, he said there was no reason for people to panic as the administration was keeping a close watch on the situation.
"Water levels are rising, and the rain has started again. Since yesterday evening, the water level has risen by about one foot. But there is no need to panic as such. The government is making every effort," he said.
Meanwhile, the iconic Chenab Rail Bridge was covered in dense fog as intermittent rain continued in the region. The weather also reduced visibility in several parts of the valley.
In Ramban district, several gates of the Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project Dam were opened after heavy rainfall caused a sharp rise in water inflow from Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban districts.
The district administration said the gates were opened to control the rising water level in the reservoir. The release of water has led to a significant increase in the flow of the Chenab River downstream.
Authorities have urged people, particularly those living along the Chenab and in low-lying areas, to remain extremely cautious due to the increased water discharge.
Residents have been advised to stay away from the swollen river, avoid crossing water channels and follow all safety instructions issued by the district administration and other concerned authorities.
The administration said it was closely monitoring the situation. It also urged people to remain alert, avoid spreading rumours and cooperate with officials to ensure public safety.
