The fresh snowfall across Kashmir Valley on Thursday has brought some relief from the prevailing cold wave conditions, subsequently leading to improvement in the weather conditions, officials said.
The Met Office Srinagar had forecasted two back-to-back western disturbances affecting the region.
A feeble western disturbance hit Jammu and Kashmir overnight, causing light to heavy snowfall across the valley, the officials said.
They added the parts of Bandipora, Baramulla, Anantnag, Kupwara, and Anantnag received moderate to heavy snowfall, and the plains in Srinagar and Ganderbal recorded light snowfall.
Tourist destinations Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg, as well as the Zojila axis, also logged fresh snowfall, the officials said. Yesterday’s snowfall marks the first of 2025 in Kashmir Valley.
The Met Office has predicted one more light snowfall at isolated higher reaches on Friday evening.
A moderate to strong western disturbance is expected to affect Jammu and Kashmir from January 4 to 6, with light to moderate snow likely at most places peaking between the night of January 4 and the morning of January 6.
Meanwhile, the nighttime temperature improved at most places in the valley.
Meanwhile, the Mughal road in J&K has also been closed for all vehicular traffic for the fifth consecutive day on Thursday due to heavy snow accumulation over the higher reaches, including Peer Ki Gali, officials said.
This alternative route connecting Jammu’s Poonch and South Kashmir’s Shopian district was shut on December 29 following heavy snowfall.
The road has been blocked due to heavy snow accumulation from Dubjan to Peer Ki Gali, a distance of 45 kilometres, they said.
