Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) chief Tariq Hameed Karra and senior Congress leadership on Saturday launched a chain of hunger strikes in Srinagar for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
During his media interaction at the protest site, Karra said that for the past six months, the Congress party has been campaigning across all 20 districts of Jammu and Kashmir for the early restoration of the statehood.
He said his party has organised protest marches, programmes in Srinagar, Jammu and Delhi despite being stopped, harassed and detained by the local authorities.
He also said that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, had written to the Prime Minister, reminding him of the promises he had made to Jammu and Kashmir on statehood assurance. Karra said both leaders had asked for a specific date for the fulfilment of the commitment.
Further, the party also observed a black day in all districts of Jammu and Kashmir to oppose the downgrading of the erstwhile state of J&K to a Union territory. He said the chain hunger strike, which began on August 9, coincides with the anniversary of the Quit India Movement.
Party workers and leaders will hold a hunger strike in Srinagar and Jammu to remind the Prime Minister about his promises. The hunger strike will continue on August 10 and 11 across both divisions, he said.
Karra said the chain hunger strike will continue till August 20, while the Parliament session remains in progress.
